a 5:28am conundrum

20 06 2008

Have you ever had a feeling that something is going on,  you don’t have any idea what it is, but you know almost certainly that something is afoot?

First some background.  On most days, I work roughly 8am to 5pm, give or take 15-30min.  I ride my bike a little over 2 miles to work every morning, which takes me anywhere from 15 to 25 minutes depending on stop lights.  I usually leave at 7:45am in the morning.  Now, as a bald man, I don’t have much “prep time” in the morning.  A quick shower, brush the teeth, get dressed, eat breakfast, pack lunch.  Consequently I try to get up at 6:30am every morning, because that gives me plenty of time to get all of that done, and still have time to spend some time reading, or on the computer, etc.

Now, for the past week I have awoken, without fail or exageration, at exactly 5:28 am every morning.  The first couple of days I thought it was a strange coincidence, but after yesterday and today, I can’t help but wonder if something more is going on.  I originally contributed it to the earlier sunrise out here, as it’s usually completely light out by the time I wake up every morning.  But I find the fact that this occurs at the same time each morning somewhat unnerving.  I haven’t heard my alarm clock in over a week.

Though unrelated, but perhaps more disconcerting, I woke up this morning to find that I had fine strands of spider web connecting my chest arms and back.  Not a lot mind you, but three or four.  The point is there were more than enough to confirm that I had been visited during the night.  This coupled with the fact that I know there are black widows out here (though no, not usually inside), fills me with unease.

Seriously, all I want is a good nights rest.
